ClickTale gives website
owners the ability to watch movies of users’ browsing
sessions and to generates ClickTale Heatmaps which sum up thousands of users'
behavior.
This movie is capable of
helping the website owners to increase conversion by revealing the
following information :
shows how much attention a specific
webpage area is getting from the visitors who visited that area, as
measured by average time.
shows the total time that all
visitors were exposed to a specific webpage area.
shows the number of visitors and
the percentage of all visitors that looked at every area including the
page bottom.
a single visitor may visit a
webpage several times, the Pageviews Heatmap shows the number of
pageviews recorded at every area on the webpage.
Here is the presentation
made by the Co-Founder and CEO of ClickTale, Dr. Tal Schwartz. The
speech was given on April 10, 2007.
ClickTale - ideas that may inspire you
What data collected by ClickTale ?
1- every mouse position coordinate and timing,
2 - every mouse click coordinate and type,
3 - every scrolling action, and every keyboard key entry.
ClickTale also help you to aggregate all
this data.
ClickTale generates a report analyzing where the page fold is
located.
ClickTale tells you how visitors are resizing their browsers upon
arriving at a website.
ClickTale gives you a heat map of visitor attention based on
scroll-bar location.
ClickTale also presents you with a heat map of mouse clicks.
ClickTale provides a visual map of average mouse movements across a
webpage.
Statistical data classifying users
based on behavior attributes and showing a representative user from
each group.
ClickTale
Heatmaps provide you 4 meaningful heatmaps : Attention, Total Time, Visitors and Pageviews
which is the overall picture of hundreds of browsers' window scrolling positions.
(1) Attention Heatmap
Reflects how much attention a specific webpage area is getting from
the visitors who visited that area, as measured by average time.
(2) Total Time Heatmap
Shows the total time that all visitors were exposed to a
specific webpage.
(3) Visitors Heatmap
Provides the number of visitors and the percent of all visitors
that looked at every area including the page bottom.
(4) Pageviews Heatmap
Every single visitor may visit a webpage several times,
the Pageviews Heatmap shows the number of pageviews recorded at
every area on the webpage.

ClickTale gives you these Benefits
See some examples :
Increase the
advertising impact.
Placement of advertisement at different location of the webpage
can yield different results. After analyzing attention data and rearrange ad placement
accordingly, webmaster can design a clean webpage layout and
achieve a better reward.
Relocate the
content to maximize content effectiveness.
In some cases, by moving the content further up the page or
close to a beautiful picture can
attract a great deal of attention and thus increasing its
effectiveness.
Problem areas can be
identified, revised and monitored to reduce abandonment areas .
In some webpages, it is normal to find that some part of
the webpages might look "bore" to cause visitors to skip or
leave. If such problem can be identify, webmaster will be able
to revise and
monitor their website content, therefore reduce the abandonment
rates.
Fig. 3: Fewer Visitors Paying More Attention Near the Page Bottom
How Does Visitor Inactivity Affect Heatmaps?
To produce heatmaps which represent
visitors’ real browsing activity rather than inactivity, the
Attention and Total Time Heatmaps are calculated based on 3
“Activity Calculation” modes.
“Normal” mode
- this is the
typical limit on inactivity of visitors to a normal webpage
where pauses of inactivity are capped at 20 seconds.
“Long” mode -
this is best
suited for webpages which have heavy text and which visitors may
take longer to read. Pauses of inactivity are limited 60 seconds
“None” mode - Attention and Total
Time are based on the total time the browser window was open
and there is no adjustment for inactivity. Here,
“None” mode will shows where visitors left their browser
windows open while doing something else.

Compare ClickTale with
traditional web analytics
This is a brand new
approach to website analysis and optimization. We provide
information about individual visitor behavior inside the web
page while traditional web analytics provide aggregated visitor
data across web pages. ClickTale also shows website owners
movies of browsing sessions and provide meaningful reports of
behavior inside their webpage by aggregating thousands of
visitor sessions. By doing so, we believe
website owners can
gain a deeper understanding of visitor behavior, which leads to
improved website usability, enhanced navigation, and increased
overall website effectiveness.
Compare ClickTale with other
website recording services
ClickTale is a mature and
reliable site-analysis tool as a result of years of experiment
and numerous testing and users feedback from thousand of
production web pages. ClickTale-enabled pages have been visited
over 100 million times and over one million pages have been
recorded. You can refer to Heatmaps for an aggregate view of
your data, advanced search capabilities, automatic tagging, and
recording of https pages such as checkout and login pages.
We also cache your pages' HTML at the time of the recording, so
the movies you see are absolutely accurate. We are the only
solution that works with member-only, password protected,
session based and intranet websites. We have an advanced API to
ease the integration of complicated scenarios and
we have
implemented innovative, patent-pending technology which doesn't
interfere with your visitor's browsing experience. We also use a
third party Content Delivery Network to deliver our files to
your visitors. So even in the rare event that our servers are
down, your website will remain unaffected and continue to be
protected by a large distributed server network.
See how ClickTale work
No software installation on the
server or client side is needed and visitors can browse your
website as they always have. Clicktale is a hosted service. You
can set up the account within minutes. Just like other web
analytics packages, website owners add a small piece of
JavaScript code to their website which serve to collects
browsing data and transmits it to the ClickTale servers for
processing. ClickTale creates movies of browsing sessions in
minutes, and website owners can log-in securely at any time to
view these movies.
Website visitors will not
notice any difference
Website visitors do not notice
any difference in their browsing since ClickTale is optimized to
minimize the use of CPU and bandwidth resources. Visitors
download approximately 10K of JavaScript, which remains in their
cache and does not need to be downloaded again. Visitors upload
approximately 2K of data per page which also does not have a
noticeable impact on their browsing.
Problem with script
interfere with other javascript code
ClickTale will not interfere
with the javascript used by other packages such as Google
Analytics.
Visitors’ privacy
Unless the visitor decides to
identify themselves to a website by logging in, and the specific
login page is being recorded, then ClickTale will capture the
visible information. Otherwise,
Website visitors remain
anonymous. Masked passwords are not recorded. ClickTale is not
able to record any activity outside of the specific web page or
outside of the browser: no personal files are recorded, no
internet history, and no interactions with locally installed
software. Also, ClickTale does not track visitors between
websites.
Use ClickTale to find bugs
When a website owner detects an
error in their web server log, they can identify particular
sessions that led to the specific pages, or sessions that
originated from a particular IP address at a certain time. The
website owner can then search for those specific sessions and
watch movies of what happened to understand the source of the
error. In addition, client side JavaScript errors are logged
inside the recording.
ClickTale record member-only
areas and secure pages
ClickTale can record pages
protected by a log-in, as well as https pages such as shopping
carts. Sensitive fields can be omitted.
There is a ClickTale
User Forum to allow user to learn from other users.
How many website visitors
will be recorded ?
It all depends on your
subscription plan and the criteria you choose.
Can ClickTale work with
flash?
With a few simple adjustments
to your HTML code will allow ClickTale to work with flash on a
limited basis.
Do I look sexy ? Do
you like the way I dress ?
ClickTale only records the
mouse movement, clicks and scroll that the visitor makes while
browsing a specific website. We neither take picture nor record
the physical body of the visitor.
Audio recording
We have no plans to record
audio. But you can use
Odeo or similar services to allow your website visitors to
leave you audio messages.
OS and
browsers
ClickTale supports Internet
Explorer and Firefox on all major operating systems.

T. Hambach has tried
a number of web analytics
packages, he credits ClickTale for
having isolated the quirks that
would give his websites added
functionality.
One of
Hambach's webpage
rotatingsignature.com
provides a service
that offers forum users a means of
randomly changing their signature
every time they post, and babehq.net,
is an adult-content site. The 2 sites
attract about 1,450 visitors per
day. After using ClickTale's playback function over the period of
a couple of months, Hambach is quite
happy because he began to
understand his users and their needs
in a different way. He did some
changes to reoriented
his sites to reflect the way that
users tend to navigate through them.
And the result is an increased
number of pages visited.
“Knowing how a user interacts with
your website can be of enormous
value!” he enthuses.
Yuval Barkai, CEO of HouseofSeats.com,
used ClickTale closed beta on May 14, 2007 and has benefited
significantly from the service. This website HouseofSeats.com, is a large
web-based ticketing operation for sport, concert, and theatre
tickets. All tickets are delivered with a secure and easy purchase
experience.
ClickTale allows Mr. Barkai to watch
hundreds of visitors browse his website. He had study his visitors'
behavior and comes out with the conclusion that
visitors browse his site in an inefficient manner; when
receiving ticket results, visitors tend to scroll down and then back
up to change the ticket criteria. After adding the search criteria at
the bottom of the results, HouseofSeats.com was able to
reduce the number of round-trips inside the page.
Most Visitors seek multiple
events for the same team during a given sport season (football,
basketball, etc). The
ClickTale recordings revealed that visitors were having a
hard time finding all the relevant tickets since they were
unable to be sorted by team. The webpage layout was
redesigned to reflect this customers need. As a result, the
webpage became more
intuitive and easier to use and lead to an increase conversion of 10% of team sports ticket purchases by
visitors who might have otherwise given up their intended purchase
because of a difficult search experience.
Mr. Barkai is happy with the changes
he initiated and appreciate the good work aided by ClickTale that improved HouseofSeat.com’s usability,
increased conversion rates, and turned browsing visitors into paying
customers.
“ClickTale has allowed us to build
a profile of our visitors that has shown us complexities we never
knew existed. They are like the Sigmund Freud of the web analytics
industry.”
This is a about a company by the name of Passport Software Inc.,
a company dealing with business accounting software and serves over 10,000 customers
through a network of 250 partners worldwide. Their website had been
using for more than four years and is used mostly as an information
portal for their distributors and end users and is able to attract
between 150 to 200 hits per day.
A
review published on TechCrunch, a web 2.0 blog.
caught the attention of Creative Marketing
Specialist at Passport, Ben Kuiman who is now
running the ClickTale service on nearly twenty of his most visited
pages. After using ClickTale for a few
weeks, some new information had been revealed about his site; the pathways that visitors use to navigate his site
and the depth to which they browse proved to be much greater than
he’d originally thought. What a surprise,
ClickTale’s heatmaps
have shown him that 65 - 100% of his users actually scroll all the way to the
bottom of his longer webpages - an unusually high amount. Heatmaps
have also allowed
him to see what sections are the most read on the page.
The objective of having
www.pass-port.com is not
to generate sales. But the data
collected from watching visitor movies, will save the
company costly decision making time with the future redesign of
their website as the evidence for the changes they need to make will be
quite apparent from the footage. The marketing manager, Robin Forde
says that the company intends to use ClickTale on the new website as
well in order to monitor its navigability and usability.
What is ClickTale’s advantage ? Kuiman
stressed that “A qualitative kind of analysis which you don’t
really get anywhere else. It’s a different perspective to see how
those pages are browsed rather than that they are just places that
people showed up on.” Kuiman is also enthused by the surprises
that ClickTale’s analytics reveal about the demographics of his
visitors. Apparently Passport Software, Inc has derived all that they had bargained for
as a result of using ClickTale– and a little extra to boot!
Thanks to Panogames.com’s
3D screenshots, instead of viewing flat images of the game,
potential buyers and industry insiders can have a taste of what it
feels like to actually be in it. Panogames.com serves as a hub for
promoting the latest and greatest releases in the videogame world.
The world's
well-established game publishing companies such as
Atari
and THQ
are their partners.
Panogames implement the service of ClickTale
after a site redesign in order to understand the impact of the
changes they’d made. Johny Vaccaro, founder of Panogames.com, sees ClickTale as a replacement to usability testing with live
participants. ClickTale revealed to him that a very small percentage
of his users scroll down to the bottom of his page, thus never
coming in contact with certain banners– a fault that he was easily
able to remedy. He also found out that most visitors don’t read the
reviews posted on his site, preferring to just look at the images
pictures and scan the titles.
Vaccaro affirms that he would
definitely recommend ClickTale to friends because "ClickTale is an
advanced usability testing tool."
RestorationSOS.com is a website that directs visitors to live
‘damage consultants’ available 24/7 who can guide home and business
owners through the initial steps of safety procedures, damage
control and get them the professional help they need immediately.
The site also features educational information about preventative
measures and the hazards of water, sewage, fire and mold. This site
attracts about 1,500 - 2,000 people on a daily basis.
Head of marketing for Restoration SOS, Oded
Jonathan began noticing patterns in user behavior within his
first short while as a ClickTale user.
He concluded after watching the ClickTale videos that there
were many more requests made than received by his company.
After some intensive research, the problem was found to lay
with the server. He then upgraded the server and
there was an increased conversion of 35% more requests.
“ClickTale can be priceless sometimes” Oded says.
Oded is
thankful to an SEO friend who gave him the scoop on ClickTale.
Now Oded watches ClickTale on an almost daily basis to see how users react
to different offers, texts, and the page itself. “ClickTale will
definitely expand your horizons when you come to see the behaviour
of your users,” claims Oded. What ClickTale offers, he says, is
more valuable than what can be found in a usability lab
because there is no sense of having one’s actions analyzed.
Oded also
says that he would make use of many other of ClickTale’s functions
such as tags and
heatmaps. Oded even concludes that “ClickTale provides a vital sort
of instant gratification whereby I can solve a problem within 24
hours. I can’t think of any other tool that would do that.”
fugees.ru
is well known for selling freelance e-books and attracting
research participants. This is a rapidly growing start -up with an
eye for the next big thing on Russian market.
fugees.ru has come a long way since its inception in June
2007. One of their project is a virtual world based on Flash
Technology. The project manager Nik Severinov claims that the site
averages about 50 hits per workday and about 15 on weekends.
His visitors had
thanked him for the increased usability that he was able to
provide because of ClickTale’s services. It is interesting to
note how Severinov ranks his use of
ClickTale’s functions ; in the following order of importance:
Recordings,
heatmaps, basic demographics, and screen and windows
sizes. Even though he also uses other analytics packages in his native
language, he credits only ClickTale for helping him ‘get to
know’ his users through the services listed above. He says
he would heartily endorse ClickTale to friends and co-workers as a
result of these improvements.
Severinov learned about
ClickTale on a SitePoint.com review. After becoming a
subscriber, he has made several keen observations regarding ClickTale’s services and functionality.
The ClickTale team has developed a friendly relationship
with Severinov who always open to helpful feedback. ClickTale
team has even come to regard Severinov and fugees.ru as a
valuable client.
The Organic Dish is a company launched
in April of 2007, currently gets about 80 unique visitors per day. The
average purchase made is about $150. The main business is to sell “dinner kits” or frozen
organic meals that clients can cook and serve in their home within
minutes. This company also host cooking sessions wherein patrons may prepare
their own meals from pre-cut, cleaned organic ingredients. Now,
this
service may also be turned into a social event for ten or more
adults. Their website is
http://www.theorganicdish.com/ is a great source of information about
the way the business works and reveals how meals may be ordered
from a menu and purchased.
The CEO - who is also one of the
co-founders of the operation, oby Hemmerling is very pleased with the services that ClickTale provides,
especially being able to track his users’ paths through the
website. He discovered immediately from the recordings and heatmaps
that users had to do a lot of hunting before they
could find the dinner menu– one of the primary reasons for visiting
the site and also the route to the checkout page. Heatmaps also
revealed that most of his visitors were scrolling all the way to the
bottom of the page to get to the info they needed and this lead Toby
rearranged the navigational menu and contents based on his
clients’ flow through the website. By doing so, he preserved
the attention
of those clients who were not as likely to hunt all the way to the
bottom of the page to find what they were looking for.
Toby first learned about ClickTale’s free service
from a blog, and thought it would be
worth a try. “You hear a lot of people say that user testing is too
complicated and expensive”, he says “but [ClickTale’s]
recording really provides about 80% of what you get out of live user
testing anyway.” Toby says he wants to take advantage of bein
g abl
e to
track users on secure pages so he is looking forward to becoming a
premium subscriber .

Ilan
Yogev uses ClickTale on jewelry4aces.com
as well as on his own getgifting.com
site. Ilan Yogev is from a
background in the field of engineering,
started dabbling in a website that
exploited his most unique and valuable
talent: picking out that perfect gift.
And that's how getgifting.com was born.
Ilan
Yogev began working as an SEO for some
companies, including the producers of
jewelry4aces.com-- a site manufacturing
and marketing fine jewellery themed
especially for card playing enthusiasts.
Eventually, he rose to the position of
Marketing Manager in the company and was
able to quit his job as an engineer to
focus full time on his internet work.
Ilan
Yogev uses the ClickTale system to see
how people navigate their way around. He
originally thought that people were not
leaving their e-mail address for a
response from getgifting.com because of
a fear of spam. After using ClickTale,
he found out that many people were
not reaching the end of his form so he
moved the e-mail request to the top of
the page. This information, he says, he
would have never learned from a regular
analytics program.
On
jewelry4aces.com, ClickTale recordings
revealed that the internal/external
scroll design was not properly used by
the site's visitors, so the menu and
gallery were re-laid out in a much more
user-friendly fashion that allows people
to see more of the jewelry.
ClickTale's videos were able to prove
that the changes were successful whereas
other analytics sites, which only
provide 'dry info' would not have been
able to attest to the user experience.
"When you see a user giving you results,
there's nothing to argue about."
